A Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging

The majority of electric vehicle charging will take place at home. The charging method will be dictated by where you are able to park, and your access to an electricity supply.

If you have a driveway or garage, charging cars overnight at home is usually cheaper and more convenient for consumers than charging in public. There are two options for charging your electric vehicle at home: using a regular UK three-pin socket or having a dedicated EV charge point installed.

As an estimated 80% of electric car charging takes place at home, it is recommended that EV drivers install a dedicated EV ChargePoint, which is a much faster and more convenient method of charging.

Choosing the right EV Charger:

There are a few different things that you need to consider when picking your EV charging point:

The Power:

7kW chargers are the most common. Up to 22kW is achievable if you have a three phase supply.

The Cost:

The chargers we work with vary in cost from £690- £1100. We do not work with the lower price chargers, as they’re generally inferior products, and require more electrician time and materials, negating their cost benefit.

The Cable:

You’ll need to decide if you want a tethered charger (with a cable) or an untethered one (without a cable).

Tethereded is less fuss, but untethered has the bonus of being able to connect to pretty much any electric car.

The Design:

You will have to see the charger on your wall everyday, after all - so get something you like the look of!

  1. Consultation

Connect with our dedicated team of experts for a comprehensive discussion about your EV charge point installation needs. We will guide you through a selection of approved EV chargers, ensuring they're perfectly suited to your home. Our team is ready to answer any questions you have about the process, from cost factors to installation steps, ensuring you're fully informed and confident in your decision.

2. Survey

The most efficient way to determine the specific requirements for your EV charge point installation is through a remote survey.

The survey is pretty simple and will only take a few minutes, requiring you to take an image of your :

  • consumer unit

  • where you would like the charger to go

  • the route between the two

In the rare case this is insufficient our team will contact you to arrange a home survey. During this survey, we will discuss optimal charger placement, map out the cable route, and assess whether your consumer unit is ready for integration with your new EV charging station.

3.Quote

Once the survey is complete, we will send you a quote with your preferred charger choice and our installation fee.

If at this stage you are still undecided on which charger you would like, we can work around this and use a placeholder untill you are certain of your choice.

Sometimes, there are a few options for the charger placement and cable route. If this is the case we will provide a quote and explanation for each option, so that you can compare the prices and make a well-informed decision.

4. Acceptance

Once you have considered all of your options and chosen the most suitable one, all that is left to do is to accept the quote and pick a date!

Once the quote is accepted we can schedule you in and get your charger installed.
